In Honor of Notable Ministry, Dr. Halim Abu Rahmeh

Dr. Halim Abu Rahmeh (1888-1945) was a prominent figure in the field of health in Jordan and Palestine. He became the first Director of Health of the Emirate, establishing regulatory medicine.  He was born in the town of Shefa Amr in Palestine in 1888, he completed his primary education there, then moved to Jerusalem to complete his secondary education at the Zion School.  He later attended the American University in Beirut, where he obtained a medical degree in 1913. He started his career as a doctor at the English Hospital in El-Salt, then he opened a private clinic in Shifa Amr. In 1918, a doctor was appointed to Safad city, then transferred to the medical center in 1922. In 1924, the government of the British delegation in Palestine sent him to London to specialize in hot zone diseases and preventive medicine at the University of London.

Upon his return, he was appointed to work in the Emirate of East Jordan in 1925, where he took the position of Director of Public Health, becoming the first person to hold this position in the history of the Emirate. During his service, he worked to establish the infrastructure of health services, and established essential health systems and laws, such as the 1926 Health Act and the Anti-Malaria Act. Medical centers and clinics were also opened in different parts of the Emirate, as well as private government hospitals. In 1929, a member of the Executive Council (government) was appointed Director of Public Health, becoming the first Minister of Health and the first Arab Christian minister in Jordanian governments.

He continued in office until 1939, where he finished his job as director of the Public Health Department.  Subsequently, the head of the doctors of the Nablus Brigade was appointed by the Palestinian government, making him the first Arab doctor to hold the post, who had previously been a threat to British doctors. During his time in Nablus, he sought to improve health services and develop the level of doctors. In recognition of his efforts, the Medal of Membership of the British Empire is awarded by King George VI.   He returned to Mandatory Palestine to serve as head of Nablus doctors in 1939 until his death in 1945,  leaving a significant legacy in the health sector in the region.
